Dream Together

Everyone knows about Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington in 1963. Less well known is that King had prepared—and actually began to deliver—a completely different speech for the event.

As he stood at the podium, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, who had heard King preach on a theme that really moved her, called out to him, “Tell them about the dream, Martin.”

King immediately left his prepared speech and began to speak from the heart about his dream for America. It was a sermon that changed history.

When we speak from the heart, we open up a possibility for others to live into.
