Hoop Dreams

Hansel Emmanuel shooting basketball with one arm.
A child with dreams of playing basketball lost his arm at age six. Now, Emmanuel Hansel is in his third season on the Austin Peay University basketball team.

At any point during his journey, it would have been hard to fault Hansel for giving up. In fact, many encouraged him to do so, including his own father.

Those looking to point him in a different direction meant well – they didn't want to see someone they cared about invest so much effort into an endeavor likely to end in disappointment. College basketball is hard enough to break into, let alone with only one arm.

But to Hansel, the work was worth it to keep chasing his dream. And eventually, his father became his biggest booster.

Whether our sneakers get hung-up or laced-up is all in our say.
