“Mr. Mayor, they said it couldn’t be done,” remarked the governor.
“They say a lot of things,” the mayor responded.
Both leaders were in a celebratory mood as they spoke at the reopening of Interstate 95 – the highway that connects the entire eastern seaboard of the United States – just 12 days after an 8-lane bridge along the route completely collapsed as a result of an explosion.
The original forecast to have the road operational was simply stated as “months.” The economic impacts would be crippling.
While most were thinking it was impossible to avoid, the leaders of the city, state, and federal government were thinking it was impossible to allow.
They asked – and kept asking – “What would it take?”
Their mindset allowed a novel solution to arise.
Their perseverance paved the way to a remarkable breakthrough.
